- Immature standard - - this indicates that a technology or standard is relatively new and that it may still take time for its initial problems to be ironed out.
- Mature standard - this indicates that a technology or standard has been in use and development for a reasonable time and that most of its initial problems have been overcome.
- Open standard - a standard that is publicly available and has various rights to use associated with it.
- Permalink - a permalink is a URL that points to a specific page/entry even after it is no longer current. This ensures that you are linking to specific, dated information.
- Recommendation - a standard agreed upon by a particular industry and community and listed by them.
- Standard - a standard is a reference point against which other things can be evaluated. In the case of the JISC Standards Catalogue we are referring to technology standards that have been approved by official standards bodies. The W3C defines a standard as a set of language or protocol rules serving as a rallying point, as a base for independent agents to communicate together without a specific and a priori agreement.
- Specification - a specification is a document that prescribes requirements to be fulfilled by a product, process, or service.
