- PREMIS is a core set of preservation metadata elements, applicable to a wide range of digital preservation activities. The data dictionary for core preservation metadata is supplemented by a set of XML schema.

- The Library of Congress has taken on maintenance activity for this standard and proposed revisions are considered by the PREMIS Editorial Committee.

- Work on this standard began in 2003. Trial use of the schemas and data dictionary began in May 2005.
