- Standard
- The UK LOM Core is an application profile of the IEEE LOM that is optimised for use by educational communities within the UK. It consists of two components: a minimum required core element set; and implementation guidelines for all LOM elements with some additional element usage requirements and recommendations. The guidelines often originate from CanCore, with some updates; the element usage requirements and recommendations include extensions to the LOM vocabularies for some elements and restrictions on the permitted value space for some others.
- Standardisation
- Work on the UK LOM Core has been carried out through UKOLN's Metadata for Education Group (MEG) and CETIS; anyone can contribute ideas and suggestions.
- Versions
- The latest completed draft is v0.2, dated May 2004; work in progress on the third draft is available, with the latest available version being dated December 2004.
- Maturity
- Work on this profile has stalled, however the work-in-progress version of the third draft represents well established practice.
- Risk Assessment
- The main barrier to uptake is the draft status and the stalling of the work on the third draft. However, using the drafts as the basis of application profiles tailored to a particular service or project would be safer than starting from scratch with the IEEE LOM.
- Take-up Elsewhere
- The UK LOM Core is closely related to application profiles used by the Jorum, the HE Academy, the Jisc X4L programme, ReLOAD and many (most?) Jisc-funded projects that handle LOM metadata.
